Pickup hits, kills Lake City bicyclist

A Lake City bicyclist was hit and killed riding along State Road 47 on Sunday afternoon in Columbia County.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) release, a 30-year-old Lake City man was driving a pickup east on County Road 242 and was approaching the intersection at State Road 47 at 2:18 p.m. A 26-year-old Lake City man was driving his bicycle south on SR 47 and was crossing the intersection when the pickup, attempting to turn left, collided with the bicycle.

Emergency responders transported the bicyclist to HCA Lake City Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

From what I saw at the accident scene, it is apparent that the bicyclist ran a red light. The bicycle lane he should have been in actually runs between two lanes of vehicles. With the right turning traffic off of 47 to his right, he may not have seen the pickup turning left on the green light.
