A multi-agency search is underway for two men who went missing after a partially submerged boat was discovered seven miles offshore near Cedar Key on Wednesday afternoon.
The men—Michael Sedor, 39, of Inglis, and David Savoie, 33, of Crystal River—departed Wednesday from Blackwater Marina in Yankeetown aboard a 31-foot 1985 Trophy recreational vessel, according to a U.S. Coast Guard report.
“We got a report yesterday a little after 2 p.m. that a citizen noticed what appeared to be boat wreckage that washed ashore there at Cedar Key, which would make sense because the prevailing winds were out of the south yesterday,” said Levy County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Lt. Scott Tummond in a phone interview.
Tummond said the U.S. Coast Guard called later Wednesday afternoon saying they had located a partially submerged vessel offshore approximately seven miles south of Cedar Key and requested assistance.
“We launched a boat with our dive team and went out there,” Tummond said, adding that the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has taken the lead in the boating accident investigation. “We’ve got a boat on the water and a dive team out there doing what we need to do to locate these guys.”
The LCSO put out a call on Facebook for the public’s help. The office asked anyone who has information that would aid in locating the missing men to contact FWC Lake City at 386-758-0525 or the LCSO at 352-486-5111.
