Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reported Wednesday morning that a second accident in Columbia County killed another bicyclist on Tuesday night.
Earlier on Tuesday, two bicyclists were hit by a vehicle headed the same way along NW Lake Jeffery Road. One was killed and the other was taken to UF Health Shands in critical condition.
The second accident happened around 10 p.m. with the bicyclist, a 78-year-old Lake City man, headed north on US 441. A Ford F350, driven by a Lake City man, 28, was also headed north when it collided with the bicyclist.
Please provide follow-up reporting on these fatal crashes that killed vulnerable road users. US 441, at least in many sections, has approved bicycle lanes and has scalloping or other features at the boundary between the motor vehicle travel lane and the bicycle lane that will dramatically alert either the driver or the cyclist who veers into such features.
The reporting that the motor vehicle/s and the bicyclist/s were travelling in the same direction makes my initial suspicion re: the fatal crashes is operator error on the part of the motor vehicle driver. This should not have happened.
I also would like a follow-up. I was friends with Tonyaa and Bud.
