The High Springs Police Department is investigating the theft of donation box money from the St. Madeleine Catholic Church.
The incident occurred at 2 p.m. on Sept. 12, a Sunday. A male who appeared to be between the ages of 45 and 55 years old entered the church sanctuary and broke into three locked donation boxes with a small pry bar tool and stole about $100.
“Right now our detective is combing through tips,” High Springs Police Chief Antoine Sheppard said in a phone interview. “We are still not sure if this person is local or someone who was just passing through.”
The suspect is of possible Middle Eastern, Hispanic, or Italian ethnicity, around 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-8 in height and likely weighed between 200 and 220 pounds. He has black hair that is starting to grey with a slight bald spot on top, thick, black eyebrows, a black mustache and olive-colored skin. He was dressed in a green, short-sleeved T-shirt with horizontal stripes, navy blue pants, and dark-colored shoes.
Investigators believe the man’s getaway vehicle was a 2002 silver/gray Toyota Camry sedan with dark window tint.
The High Springs Police Department is asking anyone with information to call the Combined Communications Center at 352-955-1818.
