Two children were killed and two adults were injured Thursday morning in a two-vehicle collision on SW Williston Road near the Interstate 75 northbound on-ramp in Gainesville.
According to Gainesville Police Department (GPD) spokesperson Art Forgey, the accident happened around 6 a.m.
A 49-year-old Williston man was driving a 2013 Nissan van eastbound on SW Williston Road and a 28-year-old Gainesville woman was driving a 2019 Nissan Altima westbound when the two vehicles collided in the intersection to enter the I-75 northbound on-ramp.
The Gainesville woman was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and the two children riding in her vehicle – a 6-month-old and a 22-month-old – were pronounced dead at the hospital. The Williston man was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
The GPD Traffic Unit is investigating the cause of the crash.
This is a tragedy, but at that intersection the speed limit is 45 mph. Unless the collision was head on, which it probably wasn’t since it happened at the on ramp, that means that those children were most likely not restrained properly.
