Tenant shoots apartment maintenance person

A Windsong Apartments tenant shot a maintenance person who mistakenly went to the wrong unit to fix a door lock early Thursday morning.

According to a Lake City Police Department (LCPD) release, officers responded to 710 SW Symphony Loop at 12:47 a.m. on Thursday to the report of a person shot.

When officers arrived, they found a person suffering from four gunshot wounds outside an apartment door that had seven bullet holes that originated from inside the unit.

Officers determined that the victim worked as the Windsong Apartments’ maintenance person who had been called to assist a tenant with a key that had broken off in their apartment door.

The investigation revealed that the maintenance person went to the wrong apartment unit door and began removing the locking mechanism from outside the door. Six occupants, including children, inside the apartment awoke to the sounds of what they believed was someone attempting to break into the unit.

One of the occupants, after watching the door’s locking mechanism being breached and having no verbal contact with the person outside, armed themselves and fired seven rounds through the door with four shots striking the maintenance person.

The maintenance person declined to press charges and emergency responders transported the victim to a local hospital.

The report indicated all individuals inside the apartment cooperated with the officers and the case will be reviewed by the State Attorney’s Office to determine if any crime has been committed.
