The University of Florida Police Department (UFPD) provided information about two individuals reported walking along the boundary of the University of Florida campus in Gainesville on Wednesday afternoon with what appeared to be rifles.

According to a UFPD alert message, at 12:25 p.m. on Wednesday, UFPD received reports of two individuals walking along the public sidewalk adjacent to campus while carrying what appeared to be rifles.

According to UFPD, the individuals were walking on public sidewalks and did not enter the university campus.

“While the demonstration may be alarming, Florida law does not prohibit individuals from openly carrying rifles in public spaces,” the UFPD message stated.

UFPD thanked members of the community who reported the incident and encouraged continued vigilance.

“A safe campus is a vigilant one,” UFPD said.
