Van collides with train in Newberry

A Hobe Sound, Florida, man driving a van on W. Newberry Road on Wednesday collided with a moving train.

According to Alachua County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Art Forgey, the crash occurred at about 12:18 p.m. at the crossing on W. Newberry Road and Seaboard Drive in downtown Newberry.

“The crossing lights were activated and a train was physically crossing W. Newberry Road,” Forgey reported.

A 2017 Nissan V200 van operated by a 71-year-old man struck the train in the crossing.

The initial investigation reveals that the driver experienced a medical emergency rendering him incapacitated to stop before hitting the train. He was transported to a local hospital.

The train, which is operated by Florida Northern Railroad reportedly received minor damage.
