A van hit and killed a woman and her dog who were walking in the 1200 block of NW 53rd Avenue on Thursday evening.

According to a Gainesville Police Department (GPD) release, the incident happened around 7:30 p.m. when the van struck the woman walking her dog.

The van stopped and remained at the scene until GPD officers arrived.

Emergency responders declared the woman and dog dead on scene. The van driver was checked for minor injuries.

GPD Traffic and Forensics investigators are on scene and the road is expected to be closed for the next few hours.

It isn’t just people. Property is being damaged by hit and run drivers. It’s becoming regular here. Someone this morning attempted to pass me in a no passing zone and smashed into me forcing me into a bus stop. Thankfully nobody injured. She attempted to flee the scene. I had to use my vehicle to finally stop her before she killed somebody.

Was the woman and dog walking on the sidewalk? It is dark at 7:30 PM. Did she have a light? Was she trying to cross the road?

No Sidewalks on 53rd avenue east of 13th street.
