Key Points
Fret not, high school volleyball fans.
The season is not officially over until tonight, as seniors get a chance to put on the jersey one last time from 5-9 p.m.
For the third straight year, Legacy Park Multipurpose Center in Alachua will host “The Prep Zone All-Star Showcase,” which is presented by Crafty Gemini Youth.
A total of 41 seniors will participate in the event, including 28 players from teams in the Mainstreet Daily News (MDN) coverage area.
There will be four teams from as far north as Columbia County, south to Marion County, east to include Union and Alachua County, and west to the Tri-County area.
Practice is at 5 p.m., followed by the semifinals at 6 p.m. on side-by-side courts. The North will play the West, and the South will face the East.
The consolation and championship games will be played 30 minutes following the conclusion of the first games, around 7:30 p.m. All games will be a best-of-3 format.
Branford, which won its first state title in program history, has a total of three players on the North team from this year’s Rural state championship team – Mylie Fernandez (S/MB), Adriauna Combs (OH/MB), and Mallory Blue (MB/OH).
Georgia Southern signee Delaney Wingenbach and University of West Florida signee Gracyn Marshall are two of three Santa Fe (Alachua) players on the North, joining Brook Findley. The Raiders finished one game shy of a Class 4A final four appearance this season.
That team will be coached by Eric Marshall and Reagan Atkins of Santa Fe, and first-year Branford coach Lachelle Sikes.
Union County (Lake City), which lost a 4-set match at Branford in the Rural-Region 3 Final on Oct. 28, will have four players on the East team – Jailyn Simmons (MB/OPP), Bella Johns (L), Indi Knox (OH), and Abigail Williams (S).
Gainesville’s Rowan Kage, who recently signed with the University of West Florida and helped lead the Hurricanes to their first final four in 14 years, will also be on the East team.
GHS coach Jerica Carter-Mitchell and Tifani Knox of Union County will be on the sidelines coaching for the East.
Williston, which lost to Branford in the Rural state semifinals, has four players on the West team – Madison Perkins (OH/DS), Kai Gowland (MH), Amelia Whitehurst (L), and Berkley Brooks (OH/DS).
Addie Sixbey (RS/OH), who helped lead Buchholz to a 20-6 record and the second round of the Class 6A state playoffs, will also participate on the West team, which includes Bell, Newberry, Saint Francis Catholic Academy, and The Rock.
The Rock’s Ruben Perez and assistant coach Darrel Card will coach the West.
The South, which will be coached by Forest head coach Jimmy Collins and assistant Angel Rivera, will include players from Dunnellon, Forest (Ocala), North Marion (Citra), Vanguard (Ocala), and West Port (Ocala).
Admission for the game(s) will be $10 per adult (day pass), $5 for students, and kids under 5 will be admitted for free. Cash and credit card will both be accepted.
Only high school coaches with an FHSAA State Series or FACA coaches card, media and college scouts will be granted free complimentary admission to the game.
