Key Points
  • Three Florida Gators — Percy Harvin, Alex Brown, and Kevin Carter — are on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot.
  • Florida's upcoming basketball game against Duke on Dec. 1 is expected to be the biggest ever held in the O-Dome, surpassing past major matchups.
  • The Share the Cure Charity Golf Tournament supporting the Keira Grace Foundation for Children’s Cancer takes place Saturday at Mark Bostick Golf Course.

1. We all love a good debate (also known as arguing), and one came up last week when they announced the ballot for the College Football Hall of Fame. Three Gators — Percy Harvin, Alex Brown and Kevin Carter — are on the ballot and face stiff competition (Cam Newton, RG3, DeMeco Ryans, etc.). Harvin is a no-brainer but you have to wonder if he’d show up for the ceremony. Brown, yes, and he should be in the Ring of Honor at The Swamp. Carter? I know I’d vote for him.

2. Since we haven’t done the Bob Dooley Invitational in two years (it’s a long story), I try to help out with other tournaments with causes that are important to me. One of them is the Share the Cure Charity Golf Tournament being played Saturday at Mark Bostick Golf Course to benefit the Keira Grace Foundation for Children’s Cancer. The foundation has been helping children for 21 years. And you can register the morning of the tourney.

Are you ready for some futbol? They say it’s the biggest sporting event in the world, and I’ll just take their word for it. It is the World Cup, and it starts Thursday with Mexico facing South Africa on Fox at 3 p.m. A day later, the U.S. faces Paraguay in Los Angeles on Fox at 9 p.m.

4. Four questions with former Gator golfer and current Champions Tour player Chris DiMarco

  1. Were you more nervous in the playoff with Tiger Woods at the Masters or playing in the Presidents Cup?
DiMarco: Believe it or not I was not nervous playing against Tiger at the Masters. Same with the Presidents Cup. Those weeks I was in complete control of all aspects of my game. I was very anxious and excited but not nervous. That has only happened a couple times in my career. Tiger did it week in and week out for 16 years.
  2. Can you still beat your son Christian, who is also a professional golfer?
    DiMarco:
If I move up a tee I can compete with my son. The kids now hit it so much further. It’s tough to beat someone when I am hitting 4 irons into greens and he is hitting gap wedges.
  3. How different is it playing the Champions Tour from the PGA Tour?
    DiMarco:
I think the difference between the two tours is the Champions Tour is just 78 guys. Friday is way less stressful as we have no cuts in our events. We still play 7,100-7,200-yard courses so distance is very important. I think when you have someone turn 50 and are still playing the PGA Tour up until that time, those are the guys that have immediate success. Most guys take 2-5 years off competitive golf before they turn 50. Getting used to playing competitively again takes some time.
  4. Is Jon Sumrall going to wake up the beast?
    DiMarco:
I am hearing nothing but great things about Coach Sumrall. It’s been a while since the Mighty Gators have been Mighty. Mediocrity has not been acceptable at UF. I think bringing back our playmakers is huge on both sides of the ball. Hopefully the kids wearing orange and blue need to realize how big and great Gator Nation is and hopefully they can play with the passion the fans have for the Greatest University in this country. Go Gators!

5. The five toughest three-game stretches for SEC football teams this fall

  • Alabama: Georgia, at Tennessee, Texas A&M in late October.
  • Florida: at Texas, Georgia, Oklahoma. At least there is a bye week before Georgia.
  • Georgia: at LSU, Oklahoma, at Texas again in late October on consecutive Saturdays.
  • Auburn: at Georgia, LSU, at Ole Miss. As Liam Neeson says in “Taken,” good luck!
  • LSU: Alabama, Texas, at Tennessee. And they will be throwing golf balls and mustard bottles in Knoxville.

6. This will happen this week

Even with no dog in the hunt, we will all get into the College World Series. Of course, we will have to familiarize ourselves with the players and coaches because none of the teams who were in Omaha last year are there this year and two teams are there for the first time, including the Troy Trojans.

7. Hot take of the week

The recently announced Florida game against Duke on Dec. 1 will be the biggest game ever played in the O-Dome. Certainly, in retrospect the Ohio State game just before Christmas in 2006 was gigantic (No. 5 Florida routed the No. 3 Buckeyes, 86-60) because they played for the natty at the end of the season. But Duke is a blue blood. That game and, at season’s end, Senior Day for this group? Gonna be expensive tickets. There have been Georgia and Tennessee games in the past that were big. This will be bigger than them all.

8. Tweet of the week

From Calvin Applebottom II: “Texas A&M joined the SEC in 2012. Lionel Messi is playing in Kyle Field before Georgia.” Facts are facts.

9. Remote drop of the week

If you have never seen “The Sting,” you won’t get it when someone flicks the side of his or her nose at you. Robert Redford and Paul Newman put on a master class in acting. And Robert Shaw is always elite.
