High school football playoffs preview, Buchholz to air on Mainstreet live stream

Buchholz will host Nease (Ponte Vedra) in the Class 6A Region 1 Semifinal that will be aired on Mainstreet Daily News live stream at 7:15 p.m. on Friday.

Key Points

We began with 13 area teams in the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) state playoffs, but we’re down to nine.

Tonight from 6 to 7 p.m., join me for a busy high school sports show at locally-owned Sonic Drive-In of Gainesville on Archer Road.

I’ll preview the FHSAA football playoffs, look back at Tuesday’s “The Prep Zone All-Star Showcase” volleyball games, talk about Tuesday’s college signings, and an interview I did on Tuesday with Union County (Lake Butler) football coach and athletics director Lamar Waters.

My guests on “The Prep Zone Sports Show” will join via phone, beginning with Oak Hall School football coach R.J. Fuhr at 6:20 p.m., followed by Hawthorne football coach Cornelius Ingram at 6:40 p.m.

Oak Hall (8-4) has won three Sunshine State Athletic Association (SSAA) playoff games in a row and advanced to Saturday’s 3A state championship game.

Last week, in a 51-34 win at The Master’s Academy (Oviedo) in the semifinals, juniors Tyler Peera (23 carries for 128 yards) and Darius Medley (14 carries for 127 yards) led a ground attack that finished with 332 yards on 47 carries (7.1 yards per carry).

“Having a two-headed monster with Tyler and Darius is awesome,” Fuhr said. “Kind of our version of thunder and lightning. Ty is a prototypical fullback, tough inside runner, and then Darius is our home run threat, but can also lower that shoulder when needed.”

The straw that stirs the drink is senior captain and quarterback Aaron Akins, who has thrown for over 1,000 yards with 13 touchdowns and rushed for 264 yards with nine rushing scores.

“He’s a true dual threat QB, evidenced by his 50-yard strike to (junior) BJ Johnson and his 50-yard TD run last Friday night,” Fuhr said.

The Eagles will play Cambridge Christian (Tampa) (9-4) at 1 p.m. on Saturday at The Villages Charter School.

“The keys to winning the game are stopping their running back, Elijah LeGrande (1,500 yards and 20 TDs rushing),” Fuhr said. “He’s a tough runner and also has speed. Jackson Langston (52 catches, 1,096 yards, 14 TDs) is a tall, rangy receiver who they like to target a lot in their passing game. We need to win time of possession and be plus in turnover margin and limit their big plays.”

Hawthorne, which defeated Branford, 42-0, in the first round of the FHSAA Rural state playoffs last Friday, will host Williston on Friday night.

The Hornets (8-1) defeated the Red Devils (10-1), 28-7, in last year’s state semifinals. Friday’s winner will advance to the state semifinals on Nov. 28.

You can listen to tonight’s show ‘live’ and ‘archived’ online at MainStreet Daily News.

On Thursday night, tune in to the Jacksonville Jaguars Coaches Show on 106.9 FM “I Am Country,” followed by this Sunday’s game at the Arizona Cardinals. The pregame show begins at 3 p.m., followed by the kickoff at 4:05 p.m.

This Friday, our only high school football broadcast will be online. Our radio coverage returns next Friday.

Buchholz will host Nease (Ponte Vedra) for a second time this season at Citizens Field. The Bobcats (10-1) used a complete game effort to defeat the Panthers (9-2), 27-7, on Sept. 26.

Join Tyler Brodie (Play-by-play) and Hank Rone (Color) for this FHSAA Class 6A-Region 1 Semifinal. You can listen to the game online at MainStreet Daily News beginning at 7:15 p.m.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
