Buchholz tops final regional baseball power poll

The 2025 high school baseball season ended with no state titles for the teams in the Mainstreet Daily News/Prep Zone Power Poll area, but three teams finished as state runner-up, and not surprisingly, those are the top three teams in the final rankings for this season.

Buchholz finished as the unanimous No. 1 team. The Bobcats (33-3) won their first 21 games, advanced all the way to the state championship game, and finished as state runners-up for the second straight year. Buchholz (33-3) was also ranked 11th in the state by MaxPreps and 24th nationally by that same website.

Buchholz ended up with a state-high 33 wins, despite losing in the 6A state championship game in Fort Myers to St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale). The Bobcats received all nine first-place votes in the final poll.

Class 2A state runner-up Trinity Christian (Jacksonville) was a unanimous No. 2 team. The Conquerors advanced to the state semifinals for the second straight year. Trinity Christian (30-5) edged Berkeley Prep (Tampa), 1-0, to advance to the 2A state title game, where they were knocked off by The First Academy (Orlando).

Another state runner-up, St. Johns Country Day (Orange Park), is third. The Spartans (26-9) were 1A state champs a year ago and advanced back to Fort Myers this spring. St. Johns Country Day edged Brito (Miami) in the semifinals before dropping the state championship game to Canterbury (Fort Myers), who was basically playing a home game at Hammond Stadium. The Spartans moved up from No. 5 in the previous poll

Spruce Creek (Port Orange) finishes at No. 4. The Hawks (30-4) were eliminated in the Region 1-7A Final by Hagerty (Oviedo) in three games.

Rounding out the top five is Rural State runner-up Lafayette (Mayo). For the second year in a row, the Hornets (25-3) advanced to the state semifinals and knocked off No. 7 Trenton, 5-1, to advance to the title game. Holmes County (Bonifay) walked off in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Lafayette, 2-1, leaving the Hornets as the state runners-up again. Lafayette was at No. 8 in the previous poll.

Bishop Snyder (Jacksonville) is at No. 6, followed by Trenton. The Tigers (25-4) advanced back to Fort Myers for the second straight year but were eliminated by Lafayette.

Clay (Green Cove Springs), who was knocked out in the Region 1-4A final, is No. 8. Episcopal (Jacksonville) and Suwannee (Live Oak) round out the top 10. The Eagles (22-8) were knocked out by Trinity Christian in the Region 1-2A Semifinal, and the Bulldogs (23-10) were beaten by eventual 3A state runner-up South Walton (Santa Rosa Beach) in the Region 1-3A Final. Suwannee moves up five spots from the previous rankings into the top 10.

The only Mainstreet Daily News area team in the second 10 is No. 13 Columbia (Lake City) and Keystone Heights received votes (RV).

Moving into the final poll is Hernando (Brooksville) at No. 14. The Leopards (20-16) advanced to the 3A state semifinals, knocking off RV North Marion (Citra), No. 20 The Villages, and RV Umatilla to win Region 2-3A as a No. 7 seed. Hernando was eliminated by South Walton in Fort Myers.

Also moving in is 16th-ranked University Christian (Jacksonville). Falling out are West Nassau (Callahan) and Vanguard (Ocala).
