COVID-19 hits high school football schedule hard

COVID-19 has impacted high school football once again.

The Santa Fe Raiders had to cancel its game against the Palatka Panthers Friday night. Fortunately, the Panthers picked up a game and will travel to Hawthorne instead.

Buchholz also had its game canceled for this Friday when Fletcher (Neptune Beach) became Duval County’s first campus closure.

Gainesville had to cancel its game at Wakulla (Crawfordville) for next Friday night. Due to COVID-19 protocols, its team has not practiced in weeks and their last game was on September 24th. Plus, it was announced yesterday that the annual Buchholz vs. Gainesville football game, which was postponed on October 9th, will not be made up. GHS’ next game isn’t until Friday, October 30.

Dixie County at Newberry

This Friday night the Dixie County Bears will travel to Newberry in a match-up of two of the hottest teams in Class 1A. The visiting Bears (4-1) have won four in a row and the Panthers (5-1) have won five in a row, including last week’s 54-23 win against Hamilton County (Jasper). Newberry won last year’s meeting 56-12 to snap a 2-game losing streak to the Bears.

Hamilton County at Chiefland

Hamilton County will travel to Chiefland. The Indians dropped to 1-3 with a 33-15 loss at Trenton last Friday. Chiefland has won four in a row in the series, including last year’s 29-3 victory.

Williston at Union County

Williston (2-4) will travel to Union County (3-2). The Red Devils have lost three of their last four, including last Friday’s 49-16 loss to Wildwood.  Williston lost a close 15-12 game at home to Union County last year.

Bell at Trenton

Bell (2-3) will travel to Trenton (2-4).  The visiting Bulldogs rushed for over 300 yards in a 52-36 win against St. Francis Catholic Academy last Friday.  Meanwhile, the Tigers got back in the win column with a 33-15 win against Chiefland.

Bronson at Franklin County

Bronson is on the road at Franklin County.  Last week the Eagles (4-2) won at Tenoroc (Lakeland), 26-8.

Joshua Christian (Jacksonville) at Branford

The Buccaneers are 3-1 this season and coming off its first loss, to Lafayette 27-13, last week. Joshua Christian is 0-2 on the season.

The Tigers come into the game looking for its first win, after an 0-3 start. They lost to Madison County 12-0 last week. The Generals are undefeated at 3-0.

Maclay at Lafayette

The Hornets are 3-2 on the year, but are looking to bounce back after a 42-7 loss to Dixie County last week. Maclay is 2-3 on the season.

Palatka at Hawthorne

The 3-1 Hornets are smarting after letting a 25-8 lead slip away last week in the fourth quarter against Bradford, losing 28-25. They will look to get back on track against the winless Panthers (0-6).

Wakulla at Suwannee

After beating Palatka 47-0 last week, the 4-2 Bulldogs face the undefeated (4-0) Wakulla War Eagles in perhaps Suwannee’s toughest test of the season.
