We begin week two of our high school football coverage with a pair of game broadcasts this week.
On Thursday, the Eastside football team will host Rickards (Tallahassee).
The visiting Raiders overcame a 27-point deficit last week to stun Godby (Tallahassee), 41-34.
“Last year, we could’ve folded,” Rickards’ head coach Quintin Lewis told the Tallahassee Democrat. “This year, we kept fighting, finding a way to win a football game. That’s what it has all been about.”
It was a somewhat sluggish performance for the Rams (1-0), who built a 21-0 lead at the half and cruised to a 30-7 win at home against Belleview.
Eastside football coach Harold “Gator” Hoskins was less than happy with his team’s performance.
“We did not look impressive at all,” Hoskins said. “If I’m being honest, we’ve got a lot, a lot to improve. We were very undisciplined tonight, too many penalties. We had highlights here and there, but I was not impressed with us tonight.”
However, the Rams got a big lift from first-year quarterback Nelson Tambling.
Rickards (1-0) won last year’s meeting against the Rams, 30-23, in Tallahassee.
Thursday’s game will be broadcast on Mainstreet Daily News beginning at 6:45 p.m. with Cam Parker (Play-by-play) and Aiden Wacksman (Color) calling the action. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
On Friday night at Citizens Field, the Buchholz football team will host Vero Beach in a matchup of state-ranked teams.
The visiting Indians (1-0), who are ranked No. 4 in Class 7A by MaxPreps, defeated Eau Gallie (Melbourne), 41-31, at home. They are loaded with D-I talent.
The Bobcats (1-0), who are ranked No. 6 in 6A, overcame a two-hour delay and a muddy field to beat Class 4A regional finalist Vanguard (Ocala), 15-13, last Thursday.
Buchholz is led by University of Florida commit Justin Williams, who is a member of the Super 11 team.
Last year, Buchholz defeated Vero Beach, 38-23, on the road.
Friday’s game will be broadcast on 106.9 FM “I am Country” beginning with the pregame coverage at 6:30 p.m. with Mike Ridaught (Play-by-play) and former Gator football player Hank Rone (Color) calling the action. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
Plus, 106.9 FM is your home to Jacksonville Jaguars football. The first regular-season game is at 1 p.m. next Sunday, Sept. 7, vs. the Carolina Panthers.
