Gainesville head football coach Dock Pollard and the Hurricanes’ football program have announced the addition of a University of Florida football legend to the GHS football staff.
Former Gator Carlton Miles will join the GHS defensive staff for the 2021 season.
“We are proud and honored to add an all-time great Florida Gator to our staff in Coach Miles,” said Pollard, who played football at UF under former head coach Steve Spurrier. “The 1900 Canesville Football Program will greatly benefit by this addition.”
Miles played at the University of Florida from 1989-1992.
He had 142 tackles his senior year, and 102 as a junior. He is regarded as one of the top 10 linebackers in Florida history.
“Enriching the lives of others has always been a joy,” Miles said. “The opportunity to join the GHS staff and walk through life with these kids and their families excites me like gameday.”
After his playing career Miles was a youth counselor, educator, and volunteer coach in Pasco, Hillsborough and Pinellas counties.
More Gators are on the way to the purple and white.
Don Van Wie, who played under former Gator coach Charley Pell in the ’70s and early ’80s, will be the Hurricanes’ kicking coach.
This past season, in Pollard’s first as head coach, Gainesville only played six games due to COVID-19. His team finished with a record of 2-4, including a 24-21 loss to Mainland (Daytona Beach) in the Class 6A state playoffs.
