Gainesville High School didn’t have to go too far to find a new boys basketball coach.
On Thursday, GHS announced the promotion of Michael Barnes to head boys basketball coach.
“Coach Barnes has several years of coaching experience at Gainesville High School on each level, including serving as a longtime varsity assistant,” said GHS athletics director Cindy Boulware. “Coach Barnes is a very hardworking and dedicated teacher and coach, who is eager to start a new chapter of GHS Men’s Basketball.”
Barnes had also previously served as the JV head coach.
“I want to thank Principal Shelnutt and our AD Coach Boulware for giving me the opportunity to lead this program,” Barnes said. “GHS is a great place to teach and coach. I look forward to working with the guys and putting a championship product out there on the court.”
He takes over for Kelly Beckham, who announced his retirement earlier this month. Beckham finished with a record of 268-108 at GHS and had eight seasons of 21 or more wins.
“I am just excited for the opportunity,” Barnes said. “I have enjoyed my time at GHS learning from Coach Beckham. He has been a great mentor to me.”
The Hurricanes finished 10-12 this past season under Beckham, falling to Columbia (Lake City), 71-52, in the 6A-District 2 semifinals.
