On Wednesday from 6-7 p.m., we are back at locally owned Sonic Drive-In (Archer Road) for “The Prep Zone Sports Show.” Our guests will include Buchholz tennis coach Robert Taylor and members of the girls and boys tennis teams.
Both programs lost in the round of 16. The boys won a third straight district title, while the Lady Bobcats were district runners-up.

On Thursday night, the Gainesville High School softball team will host Deltona for the FHSAA Class 5A-District 5 title.
The visiting No. 3 seed Wolves advanced with a 4-2 win at No. 2 seed Belleview (21-4) in the district semifinals on Tuesday night. GHS, which is the top seed in the district and the No. 3 seed in 5A-Region 1, defeated Deltona, 2-0, in last year’s 5A-District 5 championship game.
Texas A&M commit Leanna Bourdage, who is one of two future SEC softball players in the area, leads the Hurricanes (13-6) with a .358 average and has 189 strikeouts and 40 walks in 96.1 innings pitched.
Sophomore Taylor Rogers, who is batting .308, is one of several underclassmen who are leading area softball teams into district tournament play. She is tied for first on the Hurricanes for the most hits (20) with senior Lana Renicks. She is second on the team with 17 runs scored.
Future Division-I player Amiyah Jones leads Deltona. The junior leads the Wolves (13-4) with a .612 average and a .642 on base percentage. She is second with 30 hits, 23 runs scored, and a .980 slugging percentage, and is tied for second with 10 doubles.
The game will be broadcast ‘live’ on Mainstreet Daily News (audio only) with Marty Pallman (Play-by-play) and Alex Washburn (Color) calling the action, beginning with the pregame show at 6:45 p.m.
Then on Friday, the Buchholz baseball team will play a Class 6A-Region 1 Semifinal doubleheader against Oakleaf (Orange Park) in a best-of-3 series at Bobcat Park.
The visiting Knights (13-14), the No. 6 seed, upset No. 3 seed Bartram Trail (St. Johns), 12-2, on the road in last week’s regional quarterfinals.
Junior Jeter Farina leads the team in most offensive categories, including batting average (.403), OBP (.563), hits (29), RBI (19), slugging percentage (.639), doubles (7), triples (5), runs scored (29) and stolen bases (21).
The No. 2 seed Bobcats (20-7) advanced with a 12-2 win against Mandarin (Jacksonville) in last Friday’s regional quarterfinals.
Buchholz, which won a fourth straight district title this year, is led by FACA District 7 Class 6A Player of the Year Roen Kresak. The junior has a team-best .429 average, .495 OBP and 36 hits.
Last Friday, Stetson University signee Drew Almond hit a grand slam, his team-best fifth home run of the season. Almond (.316) leads the team in slugging percentage (.618) and doubles (7), and he is tied with Blake Brewer, who has signed with Gulf Coast State College, with 25 runs scored.
Brewer is second, batting .400 with 34 hits, and he leads the Bobcats, who are batting .312 as a team, with 27 RBI.
The Bobcats have a stable of pitchers, led by Jacksonville University signees Aidan Kastensmidt (4-1, 2.75 ERA, 35.2 IP, 14 BB, 50 K), who is one strikeout away from 200 in his career, and Dion Wilburn (5-3, 2.23 ERA, 37.2 IP, 10 BB, 69 K).
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University signee Cohen Lafler (38.1 IP, 6 BB, 45 K, team-best 3 saves) is two strikeouts away from 100 in his career, and Florida Gulf Coast University signee Reed Thomas (6-0, 0.61 ERA, 46 IP, 7 BB, 62 K) is undefeated in 10 appearances.
Pallman (Play-by-play) will broadcast both games on Mainstreet Daily News (audio only) with Washburn (Color) joining him for game two. Coverage begins at 4:45 p.m. with the first pitch at 5 p.m.
The second game will begin approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of game one. An “if necessary” game three is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, with Pallman and Ryan Brown (Color) calling the game.
Weather has forced area baseball teams to play doubleheaders on Friday in their best-of-3 series.
Union County (Lake Butler) (18-7), the top seed in Rural-Region 3, will host No. 4 seed Madison County (15-7) on Friday at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. The “if necessary” game will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Trenton (18-5), the No. 1 seed in Rural-Region 4, will play a doubleheader on Friday against No. 4 seed Dixie County (Cross City) (13-11) beginning at 5 p.m.
