“It’s always hard playing somebody that you haven’t seen this year, so give it to Clay,” said GHS coach Jerica Carter-Mitchell. “They knew that was their last go at it, so they gave us their best shot. We’re thankful for that because the girls have to work for it, every point.”

The Hurricanes (14-12) led for most of the first set, but an attack error by Dye allowed the Blue Devils (16-9) to tie the score at 24-all. A Clay attack error then gave GHS set point, and Dye followed with the decisive kill to secure a 26-24 victory and a 1-0 lead.

“We can always depend on Jorryn,” Carter-Mitchell said. “You know, errors happen, but she’s one of our superstars. She goes up and it looks really good most of the time.”

Dye had five kills in the opening game.

“She has performed well, especially towards the end of the season, just all the way around as far as defense, serve receive has been better, so that’s what we need from her,” Carter-Mitchell said. “We need her all six rotations, and she’s really stepped into that role as of late.”

Clay had a brief lead in the second set, but after breaking a 7-7 tie on a kill by GHS junior Jacey Carter-Mitchell, the ‘Canes built an 11-7 lead which they wouldn’t relinquish.

Senior Whitney Kinsell had an ace during the 4-0 run, which included a kill by Jacey’s sister, senior Kenzie Carter-Mitchell.

Kinsell finished with five aces.

“Her roles have changed,” Jerica Carter-Mitchell said. “She was setting two out of her three rotations in the back row, and we adjusted it because of injuries and sicknesses. We just keep changing it up, so now she’s more of a defensive specialist…she really did a good job having kind of like a laser, like a little float serve that was hard to defend. That’s what we need at the end of the season.”

Jacey Carter-Mitchell finished off the set with a kill for a 25-17 victory and a 2-0 lead. She finished with 10 kills.

“They got block touches on her a lot, but she was able to figure out what type of set tempo she needs and make sure she was available,” Jerica Carter-Mitchell said. “If she can swing hard, it’s hard to defend. It looks equally as good as Jorryn’s swing out there.”

The Carter-Mitchell sisters each had an ace in the third set. Kenzie’s first of two aces clipped the net for an early 6-2 lead, and her second ace gave the Hurricanes a 19-14 lead.

Jacey Carter-Mitchell’s ace gave GHS a 19-14 lead and her sister finished off the night with a kill and a 25-19 win to complete the sweep.

Last year, Gainesville won its third straight district title and advanced to the final four for the first time since 2011.

After coming within one point of upsetting Santa Fe (Alachua) on the road Oct. 5 and then defeating rival Buchholz 3-1 at home, the Hurricanes are riding a wave of momentum.

“Peak at the beginning of season, that’s cool, but that’s not the goal,” Jerica Carter-Mitchell said. “The goal is to get better throughout the season and peak at the end and going to five with Santa Fe and being up 14-13 with them and tasting the victory, we know that we can compete with top 10 teams, and we did it at that tournament in Tampa as well. So, this is when it matters…”
