Gilchrist County basketball showdown coming tonight

Tonight it’s a Gilchrist County showdown as the Trenton girls and boys basketball teams host the Bell Bulldogs in a pair of Class 1A-District 6 games.

The powerhouse Trenton girls are 75-0 in district play since 2015 under head coach Bryant Frye, including a 55-11 win against Hilliard on Saturday. It marked the ninth time this season the Lady Tigers have imposed a running clock against their opponent.

Frye was ejected from Trenton’s game at Providence (Jacksonville) a week ago but he is back on the sidelines tonight after serving a two-game suspension.

The Lady Tigers, who are ranked eighth in the state in Class 1A by MaxPreps, are led in scoring by senior Samarie McHenry. She leads the team in points (12.3) and rebounds (9.1) per game. McHenry scored a game-high 19 points on Saturday against the Flashes.

Bell (11-6) is led by senior Maisy McDonald, who averages 12.6 points per game. They lost at home to Trenton in the first meeting, 67-29, on Dec. 11.

The tip is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Tonight at 8 p.m. the Trenton boys basketball team will host county rival Bell.

The visiting Bulldogs had been dominating this series, winning 11 in a row since 2015. However, last year the state playoff Tigers swept both meetings. Both games were decided by nine points or less.

Bell got revenge with a 55-53 win at home back on December 11.

Trenton is the hottest team in the district after going 5-0 last week. They had wins against Union County, Lafayette (Mayo), Branford, Oak Hall, and Hilliard.

The host Tigers (8-8) are led by sophomore Xavier Jones (14.8 ppg) and junior Tyler Perry (12.2 ppg), who scored a game-high 19 points in their 50-45 come-from-behind win against Hilliard on Saturday.

Adding to the challenge is the news that Trenton coach Cedric Booth has just tested positive for Covid-19 and will not be coaching in the game. Trenton middle school head coach Ryan Hausner will serve as head coach tonight.

We’ll have radio coverage of the boys game on 106.9 FM “I am Country” beginning with our pregame coverage at 7:30 p.m.
