Tonight three time defending Class 1A state champion Madison County (10-2) travels to Hawthorne (9-2) for the Class 1A state semifinals.
The visiting Cowboys have played a tough schedule with wins against 4A schools South Sumter (Bushnell) & Bradford (Starke) and losses to 3A Runner-up Florida High (Tallahassee) and at 8A Flagler Palm Coast by one point.
Hawthorne’s defense should be able to keep them in the game. The Hornets have given up a total of just 15 points in their last four games, including limiting a Wildwood team to just eight points at home that scored 49 points the previous week in a win at Newberry.
Hawthorne averages 142 yards per game on the ground – led by Dre Lawrence who has 929 yards and 13 TDs rushing. Madison County averages 168 yards per game on the ground.
The Columbia Tigers also moved on to the next round of the high school state playoffs with a come-from-behind 28-26 win against visiting Mainland (Daytona Beach) last Friday.
Columbia’s Adeon Farmer recovered a Mainland fumble in mid-air and scored on a 58-yard run with 2:50 to play to give the Tigers their fifth straight win.
Columbia will host St. Augustine in the Class 6A Region Finals tonight. The winner will play either Lake Minneola or Gaither (Tampa) in the 6A state semifinals.
