There is plenty of sports coverage ahead this week on Mainstreet Daily News and 106.9 FM “I Am Country.”
Tonight from 6-7 p.m., I’ll be at Sonic Drive-In on 39th Avenue for “The Prep Zone” sports show. My guests for this episode include Saint Francis Catholic Academy first-year volleyball coach Breona Fung, assistant coach Caleb Wiegandt, and members of the Lady Wolves volleyball team, who are 5-1 this season.
The Wolves (5-1) had a hard-fought 3-2 loss to Newberry on Tuesday night, marking their first loss of the season.
You can listen to the show online ‘live’ and ‘archived’ at Mainstreet Daily News and ThePrepZone.com.
On Thursday night, tune in to the Jacksonville Jaguars Coaches Show on 106.9 FM “I Am Country,” followed by this Sunday’s game at the Cincinnati Bengals. The pregame show begins at noon, followed by the kickoff at 1 p.m.
We have a pair of high school football broadcasts on Friday.
Hawthorne, which is one of just a handful of teams that are still unbeaten in the area, will travel to Oakleaf (Orange Park).
Join Mainstreet Daily News Sports Director Mike Ridaught (Play-by-play) and former Gator football player Hank Rone (Color) for this matchup of unbeaten teams.
The visiting Hornets (3-0) were FHSAA Rural state runners-up last year. The host Knights (3-0) lost a one-score game at Buchholz in last year’s 6A-Region 1 Final.
Hawthorne defeated Oakleaf last year, 27-21, in Hawthorne on a “Hail Mary” pass. The visiting Knights have wins at Riverside (Jacksonville), 23-14, and home wins against Orange Park, 56-7, and Fleming Island (Orange Park), 31-0.
The Hornets have wins against Discovery (Lake Alfred), 42-0, at Newberry, 32-7, and last week’s home win against Florida High (Tallahassee), 33-27, which avenged a loss to the Seminoles last year.
You can listen to the game on 106.9 FM “I Am Country” with audio online at IamCountryGainesville.com beginning at 6:30 p.m. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
The Williston football team, which opened the season with a wild 36-35 loss at home to Chiefland in the battle for the Levy Cup, was one of seven winless teams heading into last Friday’s games. However, the Red Devils were the only ones to get their first win.
Join Cam Parker (Play-by-play) and Tori Kitchens (Color) as Williston (1-1) seeks its second straight win. Audio coverage is available on Mainstreet for this first meeting between the two programs.
The visiting Class 6A Hawks (1-2) have lost two in a row following a 37-0 win at home against McLaughlin (Lake Wales). Lake Minneola lost at home to Vanguard (Ocala), 76-0, on Aug. 29, followed by a 19-12 loss at home against Haines City.
Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. The pre-game coverage begins at 7:15 p.m.
