Tonight at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland, the Hawthorne boys basketball team defeated Hilliard 42-38 in the Class 1A state championship.
It was the second state title for the Hornets, but the first in 33 years. Hawthorne broke a 38-38 tie in the final minute by hitting 4-6 free throws, while holding Hilliard scoreless.
Hawthorne finishes the season 25-3.
