There were only two area high school football games which were not affected by Hurricane Helene this week.
Oak Hall (2-3) was supposed to play on the road but their game against Eagle’s View Academy of Jacksonville was rescheduled for Gainesville.
“The game originally was supposed to be at Eagle’s View, but they weren’t able to secure a field,” OHS Athletics Director Edwin McTureous explained via email. “We are supposed to host this Friday, and the game has not been canceled yet. We will make a decision on Friday by noon if we will play or not.”
Kickoff against the Warriors (3-2) was tentatively scheduled for 7 p.m., but the game was postponed at 1 p.m. on Friday (TBD).
Buchholz was scheduled to travel to Nease (Ponte Vedra) on Friday night for a 7 p.m. kickoff. It’s the 6A-District 3 opener for both teams.
The St. Johns County School District (SJCSD) was closed on Thursday and Friday due to Hurricane Helene, but all athletic events will go on as scheduled.
“We are playing Friday night,” Buchholz coach Mark Whittemore confirmed via text on Wednesday while also noting they “did not want to have to reschedule.”
However, that changed on Friday when it was announced that Buchholz was unable to travel due to poor conditions. The Bobcats and the Panthers will now play at 7 p.m. on Monday.
P.K. Yonge was scheduled to host Central Florida Christian Academy (Ocoee) at 7 p.m. on Friday, but on Thursday their game was moved to Monday at 6 p.m.
On Wednesday night, Bradford (Starke) (5-0) defeated Keystone Heights (2-3), 40-0, while Columbia (Lake City) was beaten at home by St. Augustine (4-1), 27-6, as the Tigers (2-4) lost their third straight game.
Williston’s home game against Trinity Catholic (Ocala) has been moved to this Monday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast online (audio only) at Mainstreet Daily News beginning at 6:45 p.m.
Red Devils head coach Robby Pruitt will go for career win No. 400.
The Class 3A-District 5 opener between Eastside and Dunnellon (3-2) has been postponed until next Thursday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. It’s also Homecoming for the Rams (3-2).
Bell, Dixie County (Cross City), Gainesville, and Hawthorne are all off this week.
Meanwhile, Buchholz looks to snap a two-game losing streak after losing at Richmond Hill (GA), 35-28, last week and at Santa Fe High School against Manatee (Bradenton), 34-27, two weeks ago.
It’s a big game for the Bobcats, who despite being 3-2 overall, are ranked No. 2 in their region (6A-Region 1) in the first Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) rankings of the season.
They are second behind Nease due to their strength of schedule.
Last week the Panthers (4-0) defeated St. Augustine, 35-34, in overtime to hand the state-ranked Yellow Jackets (3-1) their first loss of the season.
Nease also has wins against Ponte Vedra, 24-7, and at Creekside (St. Johns), 45-7, to put the Panthers at No. 11 overall in the MaxPreps state rankings.
Here is this week’s schedule along with the status of each game:
