The Gator Swim Club (GSC) finished fourth at the 2022 Florida Senior Summer Swimming Championships held July 21-24 at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center on the University of Florida campus.

The GSC women’s team finished second with 496 points and the men’s team fourth with 520 to earn fourth place with a combined score of 1,016. The other local Gainesville women’s team—the Makos Aquatic Club— finished 19th with 108 points.

The event drew more than 600 of the state’s top swimmers and 50 club teams.

The Blue Dolfins (Oviedo) scored 1,251 to win the combined team scoring. Area Tallahassee Aquatic Club took first in the men’s division with 838 points and Patriot Aquatics (Altamonte Springs) scored 533 to finish first in the women’s division.

On the women’s side, Lillie Nesty, a junior at P.K. Yonge High School, finished first in the 15-16 100-meter butterfly and the 200 individual medley, plus swam on the winning 400 freestyle relay and the 400 individual medley relay. Individual wins were worth 20 points and relay wins 40 points.

Billy Jones, a UF junior who swims for the Gator collegiate swimming team, placed first in the 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley and took second in the 100 breaststroke to highlight the men’s team.

For GSC head coach John Hulvey, it was quite a balancing act. Next week, his top swimmers travel to the Futures National Meet in Cary, North Carolina, requiring that he shuffle the schedules of some of his top swimmers.

“Every team is in the same boat,” Hulvey said.

It was the first time GSC has hosted the Florida Senior Swim Championships.

“We don’t have all of our studs swimming a lot of their events, so this is a pretty good show of our depth,” Hulvey said. “It’s always exciting to compete well against some of the best teams in the state. We look forward to continuing that next week as we’ll see a lot of our state and regional competition in North Carolina.”

Below are the results of those area athletes that finished in the top five in the competition. Full results can be found on Meet Mobile, a swimming app available.
