On a day that was dominated by a partial solar eclipse, Gainesville and Oak Hall were determined to get their baseball game in on Monday.
Even if it involved Oak Hall giving up a home game and moving the game across town to Tiny Talbot Field at GHS.
The Eagles had no problem with the change of venue, as they scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to rally past Gainesville, 5-4.
“This is definitely something I had never seen before in baseball,” Oak Hall coach Kevin Maris said. “Hats off to GHS for offering to host because we have already lost a few games this season and wanted to get this one in.”
This was the same score but the direct opposite of the first meeting between the two teams on March 8, when the Hurricanes rallied for two runs in the ninth to walk off with a 5-4 win.
“When you play these city rivals, sometimes the games are closer than you might like,” Maris said. “But we got a good pitching performance out of Troy Freeman and found enough runs in the end to win.”
Freeman improved to 4-1 as the senior right hander allowed six hits and four runs in six innings to pick up the win for the Eagles.
Gainesville (6-10) trailed 1-0 when they plated four runs in the third inning, all coming with two outs. Sophomore Chris Eckhart drove in JuJu Rojas with a single to right field to tie the game 1-1. Sophomore Connor Kemph then followed with a three-run homer into the trees past the left field fence and Gainesville led 4-1.
But those were the only mistakes Freeman made.
“He’s (Freeman) pitched well for me all season,” Maris said. “I’m very proud of him because he was under the weather tonight and we still got a lot out of him.”
The Oak Hall rally began in the fifth against GHS reliever Anthony Dang. Senior lead-off hitter Darion Medley bunted for a hit, stole second and later scored on a wild pitch to cut the Eagles deficit to 4-2.
Then came the huge sixth inning. Oak Hall scored three runs on five hits, highlighted by RBI singles by Medley and senior Ethan Szlachetka. Medley then came home for the game-winning run on an error by Gainesville shortstop Broc Tucker.
Senior Jackson Beach made his first pitching appearance of the season in the seventh and set down Gainesville 1-2-3 with two strikeouts to earn the save.
