P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School has a new athletics director, and it’s a familiar face.

Kelly Barrett, who served as P.K. Yonge’s Athletics Director from 2017-23, has been appointed as AD effective immediately. She replaces Valerie Flournoy, who served in that role from 2023-25.

“We’re excited to welcome back Coach Barrett as our Athletic Director — a dynamic leader whose passion for students, deep knowledge of our program, and proven track record of success make her return a game-changer,” said Dr. Carrie Geiger, the director at P. K. Yonge. “After a brief time away, she returns with fresh perspective, renewed energy, and the same unwavering commitment to advancing Blue Wave athletics.”

This administrative position will be responsible for leading the P.K. Yonge K-12 athletic programs and providing an academically enriching environment for Blue Wave student athletes.

“I have so much respect for the tradition and legacy of athletics at P.K. Yonge, so it means a great deal to be asked to return to the role of athletic director,” Barrett said. “Some of my fondest memories in my career are the relationships I’ve built with athletes and their families, and I look forward to building many more.”

Barrett, who coached golf at PKY but will not coach this year, served as an assistant athletic director under John Clifford for 10 years before being promoted following the retirement of Clifford, who left the Blue Wave staff after 31 years.

“Experience in the role is always an asset, but especially when it comes to dealing with the intricacies of P.K. Yonge and the University of Florida,” Barrett said. “On top of that, the P.K. Yonge community is vast, so I feel lucky to have had such a positive experience in the past and the support of the community in the future.”

Barrett brings an extensive physical education, coaching and athletic director background to the position.

“I look forward to continuing to support our existing programs and providing new opportunities to fit our growing population,” Barrett said. “And of course, getting the new gym built. I think we are all looking forward to the completion of that project.”
