The season has come to an end for the P.K. Yonge football team. The Blue Wave were scheduled to host Pensacola Catholic this Friday in the first round of the Class 3A state playoffs. However, P.K .Yonge Athletic Director Kelly Barrett notified Pensacola Catholic via email that the Blue Wave had to cancel Friday’s game.

“The P.K. Yonge football team has forfeited the regional quarterfinal scheduled for Friday, November 13 due to COVID-related concerns,” said statement sent by PK Yonge. “One positive test result was confirmed, and protocols established in collaboration with the UF Health Screen, Test and Protect program are being followed for individuals at risk of potential exposure.”

“We are incredibly disappointed, but grateful to have played 10 games this season,” said Head Football Coach Marcus McDonald, “Health and safety come first, and we’ll continue to follow protocols we’ve had in place in our effort to keep our players healthy.”

Also, Friday’s Chiefland at Hawthorne game in the Class 1A state playoffs has been moved up to Wednesday night at 6 p.m. due to Tropical Storm Eta.

Other schools in the area are closely monitoring Eta’s path and could move their games to Saturday or possibly as late as Monday.
