Sports beat: Newberry shuts out Dunnellon

On Friday night the Newberry baseball team defeated visiting Dunnellon, 6-0, to win its 10th straight game.

The Panthers got the only runs they would need in the first inning on a 3-run home run by Ma’kai Johnson.

Justen Crews picked up the win on the mound for the Panthers, who will travel to Dixie County (Cross City) on Thursday.

The Santa Fe baseball team bounced back from a 14-inning loss to Clay (Green Cove Springs) on Thursday night with a 13-0 win in five innings at Gainesville High.

Junior catcher Landon Rogers went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs, including a bases-clearing double in the fourth.

The Raiders (16-2), who finished with 14 hits, will travel to Bradford (Starke) on Thursday.

Union County (Lake Butler) improved to 18-1 with a 10-3 win at Hilliard.

Whip Davis struck out six and improved to 5-0 on the season.

The Tigers will travel to Fort White on Tuesday.

(BOYS LACROSSE) – The Class 1A No. 1-ranked Oak Hall School boys’ lacrosse team was edged by Class 2A No. 1 Ponte Vedra, 6-5, on Friday night.

It was the first loss of the season for the Eagles (11-1), who will host a state playoff game next week.

(GIRLS LACROSSE) – The Oak Hall School girls’ lacrosse team was shutout 18-0 at home by Ponte Vedra.

The Lady Eagles, who dropped their second straight game, dropped to 7-4.
