Sports beat: No. 3 Hawthorne Lady Hornets drop 4A matchup

Last night at Hawthorne High School, the Lady Hornets lost just their third game of the season. With the game tied at 31 after three quarters, visiting Jacksonville Bishop Kenny, ranked seventh in Class 4A, outscored Hawthorne 13-4 in the fourth quarter to win 44-35.

The Lady Hornets, who are ranked third in the state in Class 1A, host Williston tonight at 6 p.m.

Yesterday a couple of area players signed letters of intent to play at the next level.

Bell High School’s Taria Liles signed to play volleyball at Florida Gateway College in Lake City. Liles finished the year with a team-best 420 kills for the 20-6 Lady Bulldogs.

At Trenton High School, Jacob Guthrie signed to play baseball at Santa Fe College. Guthrie’s junior season was cut short at Trenton last spring due to COVID-19, but he was batting .417 through eight games and he was tied for first in several offensive categories.
