Sports beat: Santa Fe baseball rallies late to stun Suwannee

The Santa Fe baseball team, ranked 5th in Class 4A by MaxPreps, rallied for a 10-7 win in eight innings at Class 4A No. 1 Suwannee (Live Oak) on Tuesday night in a match-up of state-ranked teams.

“Absolute battle,” said Santa Fe coach Travis Yeckring.

The visiting Raiders (8-1) scored three in the seventh to tie it and then four in the top of the eighth to win it.

“We showed our resilience and toughness tonight having to score three in the 7th to tie it and force extras,” Yeckring said. “We continue to find different ways to win each night.

Dalton Dampier finished 2-for-4 with three RBI for Santa Fe (8-1), which won its seventh straight game.

The two teams will play again tonight at 7 p.m. in Alachua. The game was scheduled for Thursday but moved to Wednesday night due to the threat of rain.

In Lake Butler, the Union County baseball team won late against visiting Fort White.

The Tigers (10-0) rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the 6th inning for a 4-2 win at home. Braxton Dukes went the distance for Union County, giving up just four hits.

Elsewhere, Buchholz lost at Columbia (Lake City), 6-5, to fall to 5-3-1 on the season. The same two teams will play Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in Gainesville.
