Sports beat: Springstead eliminates Gainesville

The high school baseball season came to an end for the Gainesville baseball team on Monday night.

The No. 5 seed Hurricanes (7-18) lost a heart breaker to No. 4 seed Springstead (Spring Hill) in the Class 5A-District 5 Quarterfinals. The Eagles scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to eliminate GHS.

At Bishop Snyder (Jacksonville), P.K. Yonge advanced with a 2-0 win against Bradford (Starke) in the Class 3A-District 3 Quarterfinals.

The Blue Wave (17-6) will play No. 2 seed Keystone Heights in Tuesday’s district semifinals. The winner clinches a spot in the FHSAA state playoffs.

In Class 1A-District 6, No. 5 seed Branford edged No. 4 Fort White, 5-4, ending the Indians’ season at 9-7.

The Bucs (12-9) will play at 7 p.m. on Tuesday against top seed and host Union County (Lake Butler), which is ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 1A.

Lafayette (Mayo), the No. 3 seed, shut out Hilliard, 9-0, in the other semifinal. The Hornets (11-9) will face No. 2 seed Hamilton County (Jasper) at 5 p.m. in the other semifinal.

(SOFTBALL) – Columbia (Lake City), which is seeded fifth in Class 5A-District 3, eliminated No. 4 seed St. Augustine, 8-1, in the district quarterfinals. The Tigers will play top seed Gainesville on Tuesday in the district semifinals.

In Class 1A-District 6, No. 4 seed Branford edged No. 5 seed Bell, 4-3, in the district quarterfinals. The Bucs will play top seed Lafayette at 7 p.m. in Tuesday’s district semifinals.

Newberry kept its season alive with a 14-2 win against Bronson in Class 1A-District 7. The No. 4 seed Panthers (6-12) will play at 5 p.m. on Tuesday in the district semifinals against top seed Dixie County (Cross City).
