Sports beat: Williston softball crushes top seed Hawthorne to win district title

The Class 1A-District 8 championship softball game between No. 1 seed Hawthorne and No. 3 seed Williston was almost over before it started.

The top-seeded Hornets were no match for the No. 3 seed Red Devils, who mercy-ruled Hawthorne, 23-0, in three innings on Friday night. Williston scored 11 runs in the top of the first inning to put the game away.

Freshman Austine Howard was 3-for-4 with two triples and six runs driven in. Sophomore Maci Vonderstrasse finished 4-for-4 with a home run and four RBI.

Sophomore Raegan Geiger got the win in the circle by tossing three innings and allowing just one baserunner, on a walk. She allowed no hits and struck out six. Geiger also finished 4-for-4 at the plate with a double and three RBI.

Williston finished the game with 23 hits. It was a season-high in runs for the Red Devils, who will host Dixie County (Cross City) in a Class 1A regional semifinal on Thursday, May 6, while Hawthorne will travel to Trenton.

(BASEBALL) – The Buchholz baseball team lost at Chiles (Tallahassee), 8-0, in the Class 6A-District 2 championship game.

The Timberwolves scored two runs in the first inning and led 5-0 after three innings.

Seniors Caden Kresak, Cole Smithers, and Brice Miller had the only hits for the Bobcats, who dropped to 18-6-1.

Buchholz will travel to Pace for the first round of the Class 6A state playoffs on Friday, May 7.
