The girls basketball regular season is officially over, giving way to district tournaments this week.
Trenton will host the Class 1A-District 6 tournament beginning on Tuesday. The top-seeded Tigers will receive a bye, along with No. 2 seed Branford.
No. 4 seed Bell will face No. 5 seed Hilliard this afternoon at 5 p.m. That was to be followed by No. 3 seed Fort White and 6th-seeded Union County tonight at 6:30 p.m. However, Union County has forfeited and Fort White has advanced to Thursday’s district semifinals against Branford.
Tournament host and top-seeded Trenton will play the winner of the Bell-Hilliard game on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. The championship game is scheduled for Friday night at 7 p.m.
“This is my sixth year in a row hosting the district,” said Trenton coach Bryant Frye. “I’ve been the No. 1 seed every year. But every year when you go into district, teams tend to play harder. Just because we are playing at home, they know the magnitude of what the district tournament is.”
It’s win or go home on Thursday night for the Lady Tigers (20-4).
“Thursday is all about winning and getting the job done to clinch a playoff spot, and Friday is about securing a home playoff game,” Frye said. “They also know the consequences of a loss on Friday.”
Frye said the tough non-district schedule that his team has played has prepared his team for this opportunity.
“I think we have to continue doing what we have been doing all year,” he said. “I’ve tried to mix in district games with harder, tougher teams. It should help us in processing the game.”
