On Wednesday, rising senior Jacob Guthrie of Trenton High School signed his letter of intent to play baseball for Santa Fe College.

The 2019 Santa Fe College baseball team won 38 games and advanced to the FCSAA state championship (final eight teams) for the fifth straight year. They were 19-6 when COVID-19 canceled the remainder of the 2020 season.

“It means a lot to be able to sign with Santa Fe and stay close to home,” Guthrie said. “Santa Fe has a great program. They have a history of producing good players to go on and play Division-I and professional, so I’m really looking forward to it.”

Guthrie’s sister, Grace, played softball at Santa Fe as a freshman last year. Plus, he will also get an opportunity to play baseball with former high school teammate Trent Becker.

Becker was a pitcher for the 2018-2020 Trenton teams. The 2018 team lost to Madison County in the Class 1A state semifinals.

Guthrie’s top high school moment so far was winning a state championship in 2017.

As an 8th-grader he was a part of the Tigers’ Class 1A state title. Trenton finished 27-1 and defeated Madison County, 3-2, to win its second state championship in five years.

“Winning that as an 8th-grader, greatest thing ever,” Guthrie said.

Guthrie said his strength is running down fly balls in center field, but his coach said he’s also good in other areas.

“He’s got all the tools to play,” said Trenton baseball coach Scott Hall. “He can throw, run, hit and field. And he has the mentality. He knows the game.”

Guthrie’s junior season was cut short at Trenton last spring due to COVID-19, but he was batting .417 through eight games and he was tied for first in several offensive categories.

As a sophomore, he batted .348 with three doubles, one triple, one home run, 22 RBIs, walked 14 times, and stole 12 bases. He was also 3-0 as a pitcher, striking out 24 in just 18 innings to go along with a 2.38 ERA.

Hall said it’s the intangibles that sets Guthrie apart and gave him the opportunity to play at the next level.

“He’s a hard-working kid,” he said. “He plays as hard as he can and will give you all he’s got. He’s got a great attitude.”

Trenton will open up the regular season at Bronson on Tuesday, Feb. 16.
