- Dr. Brian Hoh will become dean of the UF College of Medicine on Aug. 7 after serving UF for 20 years as a neurosurgery chair and medical staff chief.

Following a national search, the University of Florida has selected Dr. Brian Hoh as the next dean of the UF College of Medicine, effective Aug. 7.
According to a UF Health release sent Monday, Hoh is a physician-scientist, educator and academic leader who has served the University of Florida for two decades. He most recently served as chair of the Lillian S. Wells Department of Neurosurgery and chief of medical staff at UF Health Shands Hospital.
As the largest of the six colleges within the UF Academic Health Center, the College of Medicine plays a central role in advancing the university’s missions of education, research and patient care, according to the release.
“UF’s College of Medicine is a vital resource for all Floridians, and the selection of the right person to serve as its dean is crucial to the college’s success,” said Mori Hosseini, chair of the UF Board of Trustees, in the release. “Dr. Hoh brings all the best qualities to the position, and I know he will do an outstanding job.”
An internationally recognized neurosurgeon, Hoh has served as president of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, chaired several national professional organizations and serves on the board of directors of the American Board of Neurological Surgery.
His research career includes more than 17 years of continuous National Institutes of Health funding focused on stroke, brain aneurysms and cerebrovascular disease. He was recognized as the nation’s highest NIH-funded neurosurgery investigator in 2021, 2023 and 2025. In 2024, the UF College of Medicine honored him with its Outstanding Research Scientist Award in Clinical, Data, or Artificial Intelligence Science.
“The dean’s leadership is critical to shaping the future of health and medicine at UF and throughout the state of Florida, and Dr. Hoh is exceptionally qualified to take on this important role,” UF President Stuart R. Bell said in the release. “We are fortunate to have Dr. Hoh, and I look forward to seeing our College of Medicine flourish under his leadership.”
Since joining the UF faculty in 2006, Hoh has overseen significant growth in the Department of Neurosurgery. Under his leadership, the department became the second-highest NIH-funded neurosurgery department in the nation, while UF Health Shands Hospital earned a top-30 national ranking in neurology and neurosurgery in the U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings.
Hoh also played a key role in establishing the UF Health Comprehensive Stroke Center and launching the UF Health Mobile Stroke Treatment Unit program, expanding access to emergency stroke care across Florida.

Hoh earned his bachelor’s degree with honors from Stanford University and his medical degree, with Alpha Omega Alpha honors, from Columbia University. He completed residency and fellowship training in neurosurgery and endovascular neurosurgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School before earning an MBA with Beta Gamma Sigma honors from the University of Florida.
As dean, Hoh will lead the College of Medicine’s efforts to educate future physicians, scientists and health professionals, expand research initiatives and strengthen partnerships that improve health outcomes across Florida and beyond.

Dr. C. Parker Gibbs Jr., the William F. Enneking and William E. Anspach Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine, will serve as acting dean from Aug. 1 through Aug. 6.
