Gas prices in the Gainesville area have gone down 27 cents per gallon over the past two months.
According to the weekly AAA gas report released Thursday, the Gainesville market dipped seven cents per gallon from $3.39 last week to $3.32. The price has decreased from $3.58 in early July.
In Florida, the average price dropped from $3.35 to $3.23, and nationwide the price fell six cents from $3.36 last week to $3.30.
The key contributors to the price drop are low gas demand and the plunging cost of oil, which is right around $70 a barrel.
“There are now ten states with gasoline averages below $3 a gallon, which means thousands of retail outlets east of the Rockies are selling gas at similarly low prices,” said Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson, in the press release. “With hurricane season remaining weak and disorganized, this trend of falling pump prices will likely continue.”
Thursday’s national average for a kilowatt of electricity at an L2 commercial charging station is 34 cents.
The latest data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) shows gas demand fell last week from 9.30 million barrels per day (b/d) to 8.93. Domestically, gasoline stocks increased from 218.4 to 219.2 million barrels of crude oil (bbl), while gasoline production increased last week, averaging 9.7 million daily.
Thursday’s national average of $3.30 is 17 cents less than last month’s $3.47. Last year, the price was at $3.81.
Florida is the 25th most expensive state in price per gallon at $3.23. Last month, gas was $3.46 per gallon and last year it was $3.65 statewide.
In the Gainesville area, last month’s price was $3.49 per gallon, and last year it was $3.77.
