Gas costs continue a downward spiral as the Florida average price per gallon tied for the largest decrease in the nation over last week.

According to Thursday’s AAA release, Florida and Michigan saw the largest statewide average drop at 17 cents per gallon. Florida went from $3.07 last week to $2.90. In the Gainesville area, prices went down 14 cents from $3.13 to $2.99.

The national average dipped 10 cents from $3.20 to $3.10, which is within one cent of matching the 2022 low of $3.09 as the demand for gas remains low and the cost per barrel of oil is around $70.

“AAA is forecasting that roughly 104 million Americans will drive to their holiday destinations this year, and they will be greeted with the gift of falling gas prices,” said Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson, in the press release. “With pump prices falling slowly each day, it is likely that the national average will slide below $3 per gallon by the end of the year.”

Recent data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) shows gas demand increased from 8.47 to 8.86 million barrels per day (b/d) last week. Domestic gasoline stocks increased slightly to 224 barrels of crude oil (bbl).

Thursday’s national average of $3.10 is 25 cents less than last month’s $3.35. Last year, the price was at $3.21.

Florida has the 19th least expensive price per gallon nationally. Last month, gas was $3.15 per gallon and last year it was $3.10 statewide.

In the Gainesville area, last month’s price was $3.20 per gallon and last year it was $3.23.

Of course, right before an election the gas prices will be low.. Put on your thinking caps people! The same people who are lowering the gas prices are working to keep candidates off the ballot. How American is that?
