Gas prices continued upward this week as the Gainesville area increased to a 2024-high of $3.67 per gallon.
According to the AAA’s weekly gas report sent on Thursday, the cost at the pump rose eight cents per gallon from last week’s $3.59. In Florida, the statewide average went from $3.56 to $3.64, and nationally the prices edged up four cents from $3.63 to $3.67.
“The situation overseas with war in both the Middle East and Ukraine has the oil market on edge,” said Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson, in the press release. “But this is also the time of year we may see a bit of a lull in gasoline demand between the end of spring breaks and ahead of Memorial Day. So the national average for gas may waffle a bit with small increases, some flat days, and even some price dips.”
The latest data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) shows gas demand rose slightly from 8.61 to 8.66 million barrels per day (b/d) last week. Nationally, the gasoline stocks decreased by 1.1 million barrels of crude oil (bbl) to 227.4 million bbl.
Thursday’s national average of $3.67 is 21 cents more than last month’s $3.46. Last year, the price was at $3.67.
Florida is the 14th most expensive state in price per gallon at $3.64. Last month, gas was $3.46 per gallon and last year it was $3.61 statewide.
In the Gainesville area, last month’s price was $3.67 per gallon, and last year it was $3.60.
