Gas prices shot up 38 cents per gallon in the Gainesville area to $4.58 since April 30.
According to the AAA’s weekly report released on Thursday, the cost per gallon has shot up for the second straight week, going from $4.20 last week to $4.58. The average price in Florida went from $4.16 to $4.51 and, and nationwide, the cost is $4.55, up from $4.30.
Gas prices saw their biggest spike in June 2022, when the national average broke the $5 per gallon barrier. Last summer, the average cost dropped to its lowest mark since 2021.
“Drivers are seeing another sharp increase at the pump, with the national average for a gallon of regular gasoline rising 25 cents for the second consecutive week to $4.55,” the AAA release stated. “Pump prices are now $1.40 higher than they were a year ago and have reached their highest level since 2022, when the national average peaked at $5.01 per gallon. While crude oil prices dipped below $100 per barrel amid ongoing negotiations to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, gasoline prices continue to face upward pressure from global supply concerns.”
The latest data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) shows that the gasoline demand decreased since April 30 from 9.10 million barrels per day (b/d) to 8.81 million. The total domestic gasoline supply decreased from 222.3 million barrels of crude oil (bbl) to 219.8 million. Gasoline production also decreased last week, averaging 9.6 million barrels per day.
Thursday’s national average for a gallon of gas is $4.55, which is up 41 cents since last month’s $4.14. Last year, the price was $3.15.
Florida has the 19th-highest price per gallon in the nation at $4.51. Last month, gas was at $4.18 per gallon, and last year it was $3.02 statewide.
In the Gainesville area, last month’s price was $4.26 per gallon, and last year it was $3.13.
