For the first time in nearly four years, the national average price for a gallon of gas has eclipsed $4.
According to the latest AAA numbers released on Thursday, the cost at the pump jumped from $3.91 on March 26 to $4.08 nationally. In the Gainesville area, the price increased from $3.93 to $4.28, and in Florida, the cost went up from $3.87 to $4.23.
Gas prices saw their biggest spike in June 2022, when the national average broke the $5 per gallon barrier. Last summer, the average cost dropped to its lowest mark since 2021.
“The national average for a gallon of regular exceeded $4 per gallon this week for the first time since August 2022. Today’s average of $4.08 is 10 cents higher than last week and $1.08 higher than a month ago,” the AAA release stated. “Crude oil prices have been surging, surpassing $100/barrel, as the conflict in the Middle East continues and the Strait of Hormuz remains closed. In 2022, gas prices remained elevated from March through August, peaking in June when the national average reached a record of $5/gallon for one week.”
The latest data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) shows that the gasoline demand decreased last week from 8.92 million barrels per day (b/d) to 8.68 million. The total domestic gasoline supply decreased from 241.4 million barrels of crude oil (bbl) to 240.9 million. Gasoline production also decreased last week, averaging 9.6 million barrels per day.
Thursday’s national average for a gallon of gas is $4.08, which is up $1.09 cents since last month’s $2.99. Last year, the price was $3.23.
Florida has the 10th-highest price per gallon in the nation at $4.23. Last month, gas was at $2.88 per gallon, and last year it was $3.17 statewide.
In the Gainesville area, last month’s price was $2.97 per gallon, and last year it was $3.22.
