Gilchrist County to vote on Sunday alcohol sales

Gilchrist County residents will vote Nov. 3rd on whether to allow alcohol sales within the county on Sundays.

Currently, ordinance 6-1 reads:
“No alcoholic beverages may be sold, consumed, served or permitted to be served or consumed in any place holding a license under the state division of alcoholic beverages and tobacco except during the times as set forth below:
1. Fridays and Saturdays, between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 a.m., the following day.
2. At no time on Sundays after the hour of 2:00 a.m.
3. All other days of the week between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 12:00 midnight.
4. December 24 (Christmas Eve) and December 31 (New Year’s Eve), between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 a.m., the following day, unless either December 24 or December 31 fall on a Sunday, and then at no time after the hour of 2:00 a.m. on that day.”

Florida State law 562.14 allows counties to regulate the hours of sale of alcohol.

The neighboring City of Chiefland amended its alcohol sales in November 2018 to extend sales on Saturdays and to allow sales on Sunday by amending its alcohol sales ordinance as follows to allow sales on Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to Midnight; Friday from 12 a.m. to 2 a.m. and from 7 a.m. to Midnight; Saturday from 12 a.m. to 2 a.m. and from 7 a.m. to Midnight; and Sunday from 12 a.m. to 2 a.m. and from 1 p.m. to Midnight.

The ballot asks voters, “Should the Board of County Commissioners amend its ordinance to authorize alcoholic beverage sales in the unincorporated areas of the county on Sundays between the hours of 7 a.m. and 12 midnight?”

If approved, the Gilchrist Board of County Commissioners would then need to move to make that amendment.
