Butler Plaza Walmart shooting injures 1, suspect surrenders himself to police

Updated (May 1): The Gainesville Police Department released the name of the suspect involved in a shooting at the Butler Plaza Walmart on April 30 that critically injured another person.

Drevon Javaris Parker, 26, a former Walmart employee, allegedly entered the employee area at the store where he got into a verbal altercation with the victim, according to the arrest report.

After the victim punched Parker, Parker then pulled out a handgun and shot the victim multiple times. Parker then left the store, went to his car in the parking lot, drove away and returned later. He returned to the store later and attempted to reenter the Walmart, but police stopped him and ordered him to the ground to check for weapons. The officer was unaware that Parker was the shooter and he was allowed to leave the scene.

Multiple witnesses identified Parker as the shooter.

A suspect surrendered to law enforcement after a shooting at the Butler Plaza Walmart in Gainesville injured a person on Wednesday night.

According to Gainesville Police Department (GPD) and Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) releases, the incident occurred around 10 p.m. at 2900 SW 42nd St.

GPD officers and ACSO deputies responded and secured the scene while providing medical care to the victim and evacuating customers and employees.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a verbal altercation between two men and a woman started outside the store but continued inside when the three entered the Walmart. It escalated into a physical altercation before the suspect produced a firearm and shot the victim.

The suspect fled the scene but reportedly turned himself in at the GPD headquarters lobby.

Alachua County Fire Rescue transported the victim to UF Health Shands Hospital. The victim is in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.
