Gainesville police officers arrested a man who fired shots at Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU) workers that led to a seven-hour standoff on Wednesday at 2917 NE 10th Dr.

According to a Gainesville Police Department (GPD) release, the incident started around 1:40 p.m. when GRU employees arrived at the residence in marked vehicles and uniforms to address a gas leak. After no one responded at the door, the workers entered the backyard to start repairs. While working on repairs, a shot was fired from inside the house. After a second shot was fired, one of the workers observed a muzzle flash from the window and heard a bullet ricochet. Both workers evacuated the yard and called 911.

A preliminary investigation identified the homeowner as Carlton Renshaw, 43. Family members described Renshaw as a loner with no friends or social media presence and confirmed that he owned multiple firearms. They were concerned about his behavior.

Drone teams from Alachua County Fire Rescue (ACFR) and GPD provided aerial reconnaissance of the property, which included a concrete bunker in the backyard. Renshaw failed to respond to multiple public address announcements.

The GPD Criminal Investigations Division secured a search warrant and SWAT teams from GPD and the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) assembled nearby. Around 9 p.m., GPD’s armored BearCat vehicle broke through the front door and an ASCO robotic device entered to search the residence. The robot’s camera located a rifle and Renshaw lying motionless on a bed under blankets.

SWAT officers entered the residence and took Renshaw into custody without incident. He was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation and then taken to Alachua County Jail. He was booked on multiple charges for aggravated assault.
