Lake City police officers arrested a man who reportedly fired a gun Tuesday night on NW Washington Street.
According to a Lake City Police Department (LCPD) release, officers responded to NW Washington Street at 11:10 p.m. to the report of a FLOCK gunshot detection alert.
When officers arrived at the scene, they spoke to two individuals seated in a parked vehicle near the location of the alleged gunshot.
Officers discovered a spent shell casing on the ground near the passenger side of the vehicle and, while questioning the occupants, Derion Leonard Lewis, 25, admitted there was a gun inside the vehicle. Officers checked the firearm, and the spent shell casing matched the ammunition found inside the gun as the same manufacturer and caliber.
“The investment the city has made in purchasing this technology has tremendously improved our response to and investigation of gunshots,” said LCPD Assistant Chief of Police Andy Miles in the release. “The FLOCK gunshot detection system provides exact locations to our officers at the moment a firearm is discharged, allowing officers to respond before suspects can flee the scene or destroy evidence.”
Lewis was arrested and charged with discharging a weapon on residential property. He was transported to the Columbia County Detention Center.
