One dies in downtown Gainesville shooting

A downtown Gainesville shooting left a man dead early Saturday morning.

According to a Gainesville Police Department (GPD) release, officers on foot patrol in downtown Gainesville heard gunshots around 1:07 a.m. and responded to 100 S. Main Street where they located a male victim located on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound.

Both citizens and officers aided the victim until EMS arrived and transported him to UF Shands Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Officers located the crime scene in a grassy area on the west side of the Alachua County Tax Collector’s Office. A forensic crime unit and detectives investigated the scene and it was determined that there was a physical confrontation between the victim and others that resulted in gunfire. The suspect fled the scene and has not been located.
