Key Points
Seven different academic teams from The Frazer School competed in various events across the country this past weekend, with several teams earning awards and top 10 finishes.
The Science Bowl team competed at a prestigious invitational competition in Boston at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Based on recent results, the top 48 science bowl teams in the U.S. were invited to compete at MIT, according to a Frazer School press release. The Science Bowl is a double-elimination tournament format.
In what was described by the founder of the MIT Science Bowl as the most competitive tournament they’ve had, the Frazer School Science Bowl team finished fourth.
According to head coach Marc Moody, the team’s only losses were by very small margins and to teams in the top three nationally: Montgomery Blair (the reigning national champs) and North Hollywood High School (third at Nationals). Lakeside High School from Seattle (a team the Frazer School beat at Nationals last year) won first place.
In the release, Moody said in his 15 years of coaching science teams, the fourth-place finish “is the greatest achievement of any science bowl team that I have ever coached.”
Meanwhile, The Frazer School middle and elementary school robotics teams competed in the Osprey Challenge Tournament in Clermont.
Coach Steven Yu took three elementary and five middle school VEX IQ teams to compete in the tournament, the release said. There were a total of 32 elementary teams and 32 middle school teams.
Below is a look at how The Frazer School’s elementary and middle school robotic teams fared in the tournament.
Elementary results:
Team 13722X – Dippin’ Bots (Ethan Song, Henry Tang, Jayden Wu, Austin Yang) ranked second in teamwork qualifications and third in robot skills, won the Build Award and became Teamwork Champions. They are currently ranked No. 7 in skills in all of Florida and will represent The FIG at the state championship in late February.
Middle school results:
Team 3722G – RN (Jerry Chu, Darren Huang, Saam Khanal, Shengsheng Yang) is the first Frazer School team to accomplish the highly respected and incredibly difficult solo achievement – The Triple Crown.
The team also won the Teamwork Champion Award, the Robot Skills Champion Award and the Excellence Award (first place overall). They are now ranked No. 2 in the state (behind another Frazer School team) and No. 49 in the U.S. in the World Skills ranking.
Lastly, The Frazer School Quiz Bowl team traveled to Jacksonville to compete in a 24-team tournament with some of the top teams from Florida present. This included Stanton College Preparatory School, the Bolles School, Pineview and others, the release said.
In the release, Frazer School Quiz Bowl coach David Geering said the team earned a first-place finish, going undefeated across 10 rounds of play.
The release noted that the final match was especially exciting, as The Frazer School was down by five points at halftime but rallied back in the second half and nearly got every question correct.
Frazer School junior Westin Martin captured the top individual scoring prize, while Abhiram Pothuri, also a junior, came in seventh, the release said.
With the win, The Frazer School qualified for High School Nationals in May.
“It is our job to prepare these kids to compete in the global economy they will face down the road,” Frazer School Principal Olanrewaju Fayiga said in the release. “We are also proud of our teachers and coaches who continue to give up many weekends to travel across the country with our kids to showcase their talents.”
