The Frazer School’s science bowl team won the North Central Florida Regional Science Bowl on Saturday, earning a bid to the national finals this spring.

According to a release, the competition on Saturday, which was hosted by the University of Florida, consisted of an eight-game, round-robin tournament, where two teams of four go head-to-head to answer science questions that are read out loud. Team members buzz in when they know the answer, like the game show “Jeopardy!” At the end of the round-robin, the two teams with the most wins play each other in the finals.

The Frazer School went undefeated in the tournament, defeating Middleton High School (Tampa), 206-36, in the final match. The release said The Frazer School’s smallest margin of victory in the tournament was 136 points, and the total points the team scored in the round-robin – 1650 – was more than the next two teams combined.

By winning the North Central Florida regional competition, The Frazer School has earned one of Florida’s two bids – there are 64 bids available for regional winners across the country, with some larger states getting multiple bids – to the National Science Bowl. The competition will be held from April 30 to May 4 in Washington, D.C.

This marks the second year in a row that The Frazer School has earned the opportunity to compete in the national competition.

“We’ve had a great year so far, and we have a unique group of competitors,” said Frazer School head science coach Marc Moody. “They were already really smart when they came to us. We have tried to create an environment where they are able to chase their interests and test their limits. I’ve known these guys for years now. I’m proud of what they’ve done and I’m honored to be a part of their journey. I hope we make a big splash at nationals to give our three seniors something really special to go out on!”
