Oak Hall team wins Columbus chess tournament

The Oak Hall Chess Club won the K-3 division over the weekend in Columbus, Ohio, at the USCF Spring Elementary Chess Championships. 

The championships drew in 1,600 students to compete, and Oak Hall’s team won the division with 20 points, outpacing a pack of New York schools.  

Aakash Jani led the Eagles with 6 points, and Celine Chen followed closely with 5 points. Addison Baumstark and James McDonald both earned 4.5 points, and Andy Fu added 2.5 points for the team.

Jani finished in fourth for the individual standings for K-3. Chen finished the individual standings in 10th place. 

Kindergartener Suraj Jani finished in seventh place for the K-1 division, winning six of seven games. Meera Jani, a fifth grader, finished in 15th place for the K-5 U1200 division. Kas Baumstark won three games in the K-6 division.

1. Oak Hall School Gainesville, Florida—20.0 points  

2. PS77-Lower Lab, New York, NY—18.5 points  

3. Baker Elementary, Great Neck, NY—17 points  

4. Hunter College Campus, New York, NY—17 points  

5. PS130 The Parkside School, Brooklyn, NY—16.5 points
