Qualifying for the Newberry Municipal election closed at noon Thursday. The incumbent commissioners running for the three seats were unopposed, so the city has canceled the election.

The three seats up for election were Commissioner Group I (Ricky Coleman), Commissioner Group II (Mark Clark) and Commissioner Group III (Monty Farnsworth). The election, previously set for April 9, will not be held, and the commissioners will receive two more years in office.

Last year’s election, for seats IV and V and the mayor, was also canceled because only incumbents were registered to run.

Coleman and Clark were also uncontested when they ran as incumbents two years ago. In that same year, Farnsworth kept his seat by a four-vote margin.

“[When] the people are happy with your leadership, they leave you in office,” Mayor Jordan Marlowe wrote in a Facebook post. “I look forward to working with you all for another term!”
